The Best Jobs in the United States: 2017
We’ve just released our list of the best jobs of 2017, curated from job postings, salary and growth opportunity statistics. All but a few are roles in computer science; seven of the top ten jobs are software engineers and developers, with positions in management, healthcare and engineering rounding out the top 25 list. Some of the highest paying positions ranked in the top ten include full stack developers (#1), data scientists (#2), development operations engineers (#3), Salesforce developers (#6) and cloud engineers (#9).
Many of the technical roles offer six-figure salaries and an ever-increasing number of job postings. “Software engineers and other technical roles continue to dominate many of the top positions for employer demand and competitive pay,” said Indeed Senior Vice President Paul D’Arcy. “But there are certainly opportunities in other sectors, with roles in management, engineering and healthcare in high demand.”
Although tech roles are prominent in the list, time-honored positions like civil engineer (#14), commercial project manager (#19), registered nurse (#20) and construction superintendent (#24) round out the top 25 best jobs of 2017:
A Technical Problem
Hiring tech talent is challenging. Companies throughout the tech industry are suffering as the inability to timely hire tech talent affects their bottom line. We know the technology field has a demand gap: job seeker interest in software architect job postings meets only 29.4% of the employer demand while dev ops job postings meet only 39.6%.
We recently surveyed more than one thousand tech recruiters and hiring managers to learn more about how the tech talent shortage is impacting their businesses. Almost 9 in 10 respondents (86%) said they find it challenging to find and hire technical talent, with more than a third (36%) saying they find it “very” challenging.
“As every business morphs into the digital version of itself, the demand for workers with highly technical abilities is increasing far faster than supply” said D’Arcy. “The result is a rapid growth in open, unfilled jobs and increases in salaries for the talent that can fill these roles.”
In some cases, companies settle for subpar candidates. The results showed that more than half (53%) of respondents hired tech talent despite candidates not meeting job description requirements. Additionally, companies that have trouble achieving their hiring goals must fill the gaps with existing employees, which can create turnover. More than a third of surveyed respondents (36%) said the inability to hire a qualified candidate caused burnout in existing employees and affected their business’s bottom line.
